Patrick Girondi

FOUNDER/PRESIDENT

Patrick Girondi has long been involved in activities related to rare diseases. In 1983 he was instrumental in the start-up of the Robin Hood Association, a non-profit organization providing financial aid for medical services to patients with rare diseases. In 1992, he later focused his efforts on the life-threatening blood disorder, Thalassemia. A partnership was later formed with Emerging Pharmaceutical Technology (EPT) to advance the development of treatments for thalassemia. In 1995 EPT became the foundation for the start-up of Beacon Pharmaceuticals and its successor, Beacon Laboratories. Beacon focused on the discovery and development of small molecules regulating gene expression in cancer from 1995 through 2004. In 1995, Mr. Girondi opened the San Rocco Medical Center in Altamura, Italy. The center served many patients with rare diseases. Mr. Girondi and San Rocco Medical Center played integral roles in the clinical trials from 1997-1998 for 38 patients using arginine butyrate and isobutyramide. Mr. Girondi was a member of the Board of Directors of Beacon and remained in this position until EGT acquired the company’s intellectual property in 2004. 

Mr. Girondi is a respected and well-known leader in the field of rare diseases and has traveled all over the world counseling medical centers on their strategies to be more effective in the rare disease camp. Mr. Girondi is trusted and esteemed by many patient organizations including and not limited to: Cooley’s Anemia International; Think India; Thalassemics India; Giambrone Foundation; and Piera Cutina Foundation. 

He has received honors and awards including:

As Founder of San Rocco Therapeutics, Patrick Girondi collaborates with dozens of medical institutions and foundations including Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.

Mr. Girondi is also an established author and musician, having released five albums in support of rare disease. His book Flight of the Rondone: High School Dropout VS Big Pharma: The Fight to Save My Son’s Life was recently published by Skyhorse Publishing in 2022.
